The original cave had to be closed, but this reproduction is so well done that it looks as good as the original. Lascaux II at Montignac is a cave containing some amazing rock paintings. This area of town is known as the rue de la Salamandre since it contains many buildings ordained with the Salamander emblem of King Francois I. If you do not have the time to wander around it, head for Hôtel Plamon which has five arcades leading into a covered market. In the north, the town of Sarlat-La-Canéda is home to a huge market every Saturday that is generally regarded as the best in the region. Follow the river east of Bergerac and you will come across Trémolat, a charming village with a fortified church that dates back to the 12 th century. There is also Monbazillac which was a place of worship for the Huguenots. Nearby is the Château de Lanquais, dating from the 15-17 th centuries and worked on by masons from the Louvre. In addition to being a port, there are dozens of narrow streets to explore and plenty of restaurants to enjoy fine food at. For those who don't want to spend all day at one of the beautiful beaches, there is plenty to see and do.īergerac is perhaps the most famous town in the region. SightseeingĪs a very large region, the tourist attractions in Aquitaine are widely spread across the area. Plan your journey to enjoy some of the French scenery on your way down. Driving to this region is relatively easy since it is well signposted from all the main ferry ports and very scenic.
